The dandelion plant's original Latin name is Leontodon taraxacum. Dandelion derives its name from the French term dent-de-lion, translation of medieval Latin dens leonis, meaning tooth of the lion, because its serrated leaves resemble a lion's teeth. The plant is also called doon-head-clock, milk witch, witch's gowan, yellow-gowan, monks' head, Irish daisy, cankerwort, puff-ball, blowball, and priest's-crown. Alternative names for dandelion include swine's snout, pee-a-bed, wet-a-bed, faceclock, white endive, and wild endive.
