In the 1850s, aluminum was more valuable than gold. A 2.2-pound (one kilogram) bar of gold was valued at $664, but 2.2 kilograms (2.2 pounds) of aluminum were almost twice as valuable at $1,200. This is due to the fact that, at the time, pure aluminum was hard to come by and costly to extract from bauxite.
