Mexican general and politician Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna had to have his leg amputated after being struck by cannon fire in 1838. He requested that his leg be unearthed so that it might be buried once more with all military honors and a funeral service that would include prayers and speeches. Finally, it was placed inside a crystal vase and buried under an impressive monument in the Santa Paula Cemetery.
