The olive wreath was the original prize for the winner at the Ancient Olympic Games. It was an olive branch, off the wild olive tree that grew at Olympia, twisted into a circle to form a crown. Sometimes these wreaths were painted gold and other times they were left uncolored. When the modern Olympic Games began medals started to be awarded to successful olympian competitors. The first-place athlete is awarded a gold medal, second place a silver medal and third place a bronze medal. Medals are not the only awards given to winners. The first eight athletes in each competition receive an Olympic diploma.
